This lively, active nano fish has orange and yellow tones with black spots and red accents, and schools reliably well and is not shy; the Serpae Tetra or 'Hyphessobrycon eques' is a very popular fish in planted tanks. Originally from Brazil and Paraguay, these fish do just fine in a 20-gallon aquarium. We find that having at least six of them in a small school puts these fish at ease and helps them to settle in and feel safe. In fact, it has been noted that if you keep a group of these fish in numbers smaller than six fish, they can adopt fin nipping behavior, so this is best avoided by keeping at least six fish together in a tiny school.
They are unfussy eaters and take fish flakes very well. They're generally found in the wild living in water ranging a from Ph of 5.0 up to a Ph of 7.5, so they should settle into just about any freshwater aquarium with ease. They enjoy being around plants and often use them for refuge. These fish do not enjoy high current; indeed, they hail from slow moving water of lakes and ponds, and not flowing river systems.
