Description

Apistogramma Kullanderi, commonly known as Kullander's Dwarf Cichlid or sometimes as the Giant Apistogramma, is an incredibly rare and scientifically significant fish species native to the upper Rio Curuá in the central Brazilian Serra do Cachimbo, Para, Brazil. The Apistogramma genus is renowned for its diverse and charismatic dwarf cichlids, and Apistogramma Kullanderi is no exception. This species has drawn the attention of aquarists and researchers alike due to its striking colors and intriguing behavior.

Apistogramma Kullanderi is a member of the family Cichlidae and the genus Apistogramma, which includes over 90 recognized species. The species was first described for S.O. Kullander in 1980. Its classification within the genus has evolved over time, reflecting advancements in our understanding of the Apistogramma group. This stunning and rare dwarf cichlid is primarily found in the upper Rio Curuá, a tributary of the Rio Tapajós in the central Brazilian state of Para. Its habitat consists of clear, slow-moving waters characterized by dense aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, and rocky substrates. The Rio Curuá basin is known for its lush, tropical rainforest surroundings, making it an ecologically significant region.

Males of Apistogramma Kullanderi are known for their vibrant colors, which can include striking shades of red, blue, and yellow. The species exhibits sexual dimorphism, with males typically being larger and more brightly colored than females. These visual cues play a vital role in territorial disputes and courtship rituals within the species. It is noteworthy that this species is considered the largest Apistogramma that exists.

This is a fascinating species known for social structure and breeding behavior. Males establish territories, which they fiercely defend, while females select mates based on the males' vibrant coloration, machismo and courtship displays. During breeding, females lay their eggs in concealed locations, and males actively participate in the guarding of eggs and fry. After the fry hatch, the female fish will become extremely protective of them and it is often necessary to remove other fish, including the male, from the tank so that she may raise her young in peace. This is a large Apistogramma which is a natural micro-predator. In its natural habitat, Apistogramma Kullanderi plays an essential role in regulating aquatic invertebrate populations and contributing to nutrient cycling. The species also serves as a prey item for larger aquatic predators, influencing the dynamics of the food web in its ecosystem.

Apistogramma Kullanderi is a species of scientific importance, and this is your chance to own a breeder’s pair of these rare and wonderfully fascinating fish. Their presence in the upper Rio Curuá underscores the biodiversity of the region and the intricate web of life within its ecosystem, and this species lends itself particularly well to being used in a Brazilian biotope-style aquarium. The females are currently about 2 inches long and the males are perhaps 2.25 to 2.5 inches long. They are not fully grown yet but are nearing young adulthood. The specimens we have on offer do not yet display adult color patterns. These fish ship individually bagged, one fish per bag.
