What could be more captivating than a tight shoal of tiny fish, each one glowing like molten amber suspended in water? The Ember Tetra (Hyphessobrycon amandae) brings exactly that enchantment to any planted aquarium. Their delicate, streamlined bodies shimmer with fiery orange-red hues, catching the light as they dart gracefully through the plants. Watching a school of Ember Tetras move in perfect unison is mesmerizing—their synchronized flicks and glides create a living ribbon of color that dances across the tank. Small yet full of energy, these fish are ideal for aquarists who want active, engaging residents that bring both charm and constant movement to a planted aquascape.
Native to the slow-flowing tributaries of the Araguaia River basin in South America, Ember Tetras are accustomed to warm, slightly acidic waters rich with leaf litter and submerged vegetation. In the aquarium, they thrive in densely planted tanks with driftwood, roots, and small caves, which provide hiding spots and mimic the quiet, shaded environments they favor in the wild. Peaceful and highly social, these tetras do best in groups of at least six to ten individuals, forming tight shoals that move as one. Their gentle temperament makes them excellent companions for other small, non-aggressive freshwater fish, allowing them to coexist harmoniously while still standing out with their vibrant, ember-like glow.
To keep Ember Tetras healthy, vibrant, and full of life, it is essential to maintain stable water conditions, with temperatures ranging from 72°F to 84°F and a slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.5–7.3. They are omnivores, readily accepting a varied diet of high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods such as daphnia or brine shrimp, which helps bring out their best colors. Regular water changes and a gentle filtration system will keep their environment pristine, encouraging lively behavior and long-term health. These schooling fish do not ship individually bagged.
