The Clown Killifish (Epiplatys annulatus), also known as the Rocket Killifish, is a stunning nano fish from the family Nothobranchiidae. Originally described by George Albert Boulenger in 1915, this species is native to coastal West Africa, including Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. In the wild, it inhabits shallow, calm freshwater systems such as swamps, marginal streams, and lowland rainforest edges. Its torpedo-shaped, elongated body, round head, and upturned mouth make it an agile swimmer, while the dorsal fin is positioned far back on the body and the spade-shaped caudal fin features elongated central rays in adult males. These small, streamlined fish are perfectly adapted to navigate dense vegetation and leaf-litter, making them an ideal choice for nano aquariums and carefully designed freshwater setups.
Males of the species are known for their vibrant, jewel-like coloration. Their bodies feature alternating bands of light tan and deep brown, while the caudal fins boast bright yellow and red stripes that create a “rocket exhaust” effect, inspiring the common name Rocket Killifish. Females are smaller and less brightly colored but still display similar banding patterns, adding visual harmony to a tank. Behaviorally, Clown Killifish are active yet peaceful, with males occasionally chasing one another in harmless displays of dominance. These charming interactions, combined with their energetic swimming and elegant fin displays, make them an engaging and captivating addition to any suitable aquarium.
In captivity, Clown Killifish thrive when their natural habitat is carefully mimicked. They prefer shallow water with gentle surface conditions and plenty of floating or fine vegetation. Soft, slightly acidic water and warmer temperatures help maintain their health and coloration, while a secure lid is essential due to their jumping ability. Their diet consists of small live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and micro-worms, which are ideal for their upturned mouths and surface-oriented feeding style. Breeding is rewarding, with adults laying adhesive eggs in moss or fine vegetation, and fry growing best in shallow water with micro-food. These fish do not ship individually bagged.
