Some twenty-five years ago, a small and mysterious group of fish arrived in Germany from Brazil, setting off a wave of curiosity among aquarists and ichthyologists alike. At the time, these fish represented an unknown species, and to complicate matters, the shipment came without any collection notes or locality data. The only fact known about them was their Brazilian origin. Fortunately, German breeders were quick to recognize their potential and successfully established them in captivity, long before their true origins were scientifically determined. Years later, further research revealed that these fish hail from the State of Mato Grosso in central Brazil, specifically from the upper reaches of the Rio Juruena and Rio Guaporé systems, two biodiverse regions known for their pristine, clear waters and abundance of aquatic life.

For more than two decades, these fish circulated in the aquarium world under the charming trade name “Imperial Lapis Tetra,” admired for their beauty yet shrouded in mystery. Today, they are formally recognized by the scientific community as Hyphessobrycon cyanotaenia, a species still regarded as one of the gems of the South American tetra family. Their rarity in the trade only adds to their allure, as they are seldom available for purchase and almost never in the impressive sizes we currently offer. The larger specimens in this collection reach nearly 1.5 inches in length, showcasing the full brilliance of their mature coloration.

A peaceful and refined species, the Imperial Lapis Tetra thrives in aquariums that mirror the soft, clean, slightly acidic waters of its natural habitat. It coexists beautifully with other gentle, non-aggressive tankmates and adapts well to planted aquascapes rich in cover and open swimming space. Visually, this tetra is extraordinary: a thick, jet-black lateral stripe runs the length of its body, bordered by a vivid neon-blue band that catches the light with electric intensity. Above this stripe, the blue gradually shifts into a glowing green-yellow amber tone across the upper body, producing a radiant, layered effect that justifies its regal name. Shimmering, elegant, and truly rare, Hyphessobrycon cyanotaenia stands among the most striking and sought-after tetras from Brazil today. This fish does not ship individually bagged.
