Gertrude’s Blue Eye Rainbowfish (Pseudomugil gertrudae) is a small, freshwater rainbowfish native to Papua New Guinea and parts of northern Australia. It typically grows to around 3–4 centimeters in length and is known for its slender, streamlined body and vivid coloration. The species’ hallmark feature is its brilliant, metallic blue eyes, which stand out strikingly against its silver or pale body, often accented with subtle iridescent hints of yellow, green, or blue along the fins and flanks. Males tend to display more intense coloration, particularly during courtship, while females are slightly plainer but equally graceful.

In the wild, Pseudomugil gertrudae inhabits slow-moving streams, small rivers, and swampy areas with dense aquatic vegetation. They thrive in soft, slightly acidic to neutral water and prefer well-planted tanks in captivity to mimic their natural environment. Gertrude’s Blue Eye Rainbowfish is a peaceful and social species, best kept in small schools, which allows them to exhibit their characteristic schooling behavior and active, darting movements. Their diet includes small insects, micro-crustaceans, and zooplankton in nature, while in aquariums they readily accept high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods, which help enhance their coloration and vitality.

This species is suitable for community aquariums with other small, non-aggressive fish and provides both visual appeal and dynamic movement. Their small size, bright eyes, and graceful fins make them particularly captivating for aquarists seeking a lively, colorful centerpiece in a small or medium-sized tank. They also breed readily under proper conditions, with males displaying more vivid coloration and forked fins during courtship. Overall, Gertrude’s Blue Eye Rainbowfish is celebrated for its combination of elegance, peaceful temperament, and striking appearance, making it a popular choice among freshwater enthusiasts.
