The Double Bloody Mary Hillstream Loach (Gastromyzon sp. ‘Double Bloody Mary’) is a striking and rare freshwater fish native to the fast-flowing rivers and streams of Borneo. Its name highlights the characteristic red markings on both the dorsal fin and the caudal fin, creating a vivid contrast against the muted tones of the body. Like other members of the genus Gastromyzon, it has a flattened body and broad fins adapted for clinging to rocks in swift currents, allowing it to navigate and graze efficiently in its natural habitat.

Successfully keeping this hillstream loach in an aquarium requires careful replication of its native environment. Strong water flow and high oxygenation are essential, and a minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended for a small group. Smooth rocks, flat driftwood, and shaded hiding spots provide natural grazing surfaces and refuge, while a light-colored substrate helps the fish display its magnificent tiger stripe patterns to full effect, enhancing its visual appeal.

The Double Bloody Mary Hillstream Loach is primarily an algae and biofilm grazer, but its diet should be supplemented with high-quality foods rich in protein: blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach, and especially Soilent Green by Repashy, which these fish do very well on. Peaceful and social by nature, they are best kept in groups of three or more and can be housed with other non-aggressive species such as small rasboras or tetras. In a properly maintained high-flow aquarium with light substrate, these loaches exhibit both their dramatic red markings and intricate tiger stripe patterns.
