Description
Apistogramma agassizii is a South American dwarf cichlid that has as many color forms as it does collection points. In the wild these fish vary in color on their body from blue to red to yellow, and their fins all vary in color from blue and purple streaked to a bright, pure red. Ours are European tank bred fish that have been selectively bred for generations in order to achieve a very specific color palette. The “super fire red” refers to the deep purple on the top of its back, which look like smoldering embers as they transition into the finnage of the fish, which are a flaming red orange. Beneath the purple dorsal ridge of these fish, they transition to a beautiful pink coral color, and then into a golden yellow on their belly, which is sometimes matched by the trailing ventral fins.
These fish, in the wild, are collected from a variety of places, across much of the northern third of the South American continent. All along different tributaries and creeks which feed and are fed from the Amazon river, these fish are collected in all of their different color forms. In the future, they may also even be reclassified in more detail, possibly separating different collection points into distinct species. Do keep in mind that no matter which collection point these fish might come from, the water will never get above a 6.5ph, and the water hardness will almost always be nearly undetectable due to all of the leaves and branches rotting in the water. Our tank bred ones are much more tolerant to different water conditions, and these little fish will be quite happy in slightly acidic to neutral water, which can be up to 400ppm. This is one of the greatest benefits to getting fish that have been tank bred over multiple generations, but these fish will still appreciate the addition of leaves and branches for them to hide in, as well as nibble off of.
Apistogramma agassizii will be a great addition to any peaceful community tank and tends to not bother anything that is not the same species as it. Some great tank mates to consider would be smaller tetras and rasboras, which will stay closer to the surface of the water and contribute to a feeling of security for the dwarf cichlids. In such a community setup, these gorgeous fish will show off their most natural behavior, as well as their brightest coloration. These fish ship individually bagged.
