Description
The Green Avatar Angelfish, a captivating variant of the freshwater angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare), is admired in the aquarium hobby for its striking coloration and graceful movements. For optimal health and to encourage vibrant coloration, maintaining a tank temperature between 76° and 86° F (24° and 30° C) with a pH level ranging from 6.0 to 7.4 is recommended. While angelfish can tolerate some variations, consistency in water parameters, particularly regarding ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels (nitrate levels should be kept under 20 ppm), is essential for their long-term well-being. A well-established and cycled tank is crucial, and regular water changes, along with appropriate filtration, are necessary to maintain water quality. Due to their distinct, tall body shape, angelfish need a suitably sized aquarium, ideally a tank with ample height, at least 40 cm (15.7 inches), and at least 40 gallons for a pair. For a larger group, a 90-gallon tank or more is often recommended to minimize aggression, especially as they mature. They appreciate a planted environment that mimics their natural habitat, offering them shelter and visual interest. Consider incorporating plants like Anubias, Java Fern, or Sword Plants, along with smooth rocks and driftwood to provide hiding spots and territories. In terms of diet, the Green Avatar Angelfish is omnivorous and thrives on a varied intake of high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen, and live foods. Supplementing their diet with blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini ensures a balanced nutritional intake. Feeding small portions multiple times a day is generally preferred over a single large meal. Regarding social dynamics, these angelfish are typically peaceful, making them suitable for community aquariums alongside other similarly sized, tranquil species such as tetras, rasboras, and Corydoras catfish. However, it's wise to avoid aggressive or predatory species that might view them as prey or compete for resources. During breeding, angelfish can become territorial, and providing enough space and hiding places for other tank inhabitants is particularly important at this time. Dwarf shrimp and other small, delicate invertebrates are not recommended tankmates as angelfish may prey on them. With consistent care and proper conditions, the Green Avatar Angelfish can be a rewarding and long-lived addition to a freshwater aquarium, potentially living 8 to 10 years.
