Description
From the Nothobranchiidae family of freshwater fishes, we are pleased to offer the stunning jewel-like nano fish Epiplatys annulatus, more commonly known as both the 'Clown Killifish' or the 'Rocket Killifish'. This wonderful tiny killifish was first described as Haplochilus annulatus by George Albert Boulenger in 1915. Originally discovered in Sierra Leone, these fish are widespread and are native to large swaths of fresh water habitats in Guinea and Liberia as well as Sierra Leone. Behaviorally these are an active but peaceful fish. The males of the species will often chase each other around and jockey for dominance. While the female of the species is less colorful and smaller than the males, they are quite similar in coloration and markings. The males are covered in bands of light tan and deep burnt brown. The caudal fins of the species are certainly one of the most notable features, being brightly colored with yellow and red stripes, resembling the exhaust flame of a rocket ship (hence the common name). These are a torpedo shaped fish and feature a round head and an upturned mouth. The dorsal is placed far back on the body, with the first rays of the dorsal beginning just above the last rays of the anal fin. The caudal is spade shaped, and the central rays of an adult's caudal fins are elongated. These fish do not ship individually bagged.
