Description
The Bloody Mary Hillstream Loach (Gastromyzon sp. "Bloody Mary") is a captivating and rare freshwater fish originating from the fast-flowing rivers and streams of Borneo. This species gets its name from the striking blood-red markings on its dorsal fin and the upper part of its caudal peduncle, contrasting with a more subdued body color. When keeping these loaches in an aquarium, it is essential to replicate their natural habitat, which means providing strong water movement and high levels of oxygenation. A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended for a small group, with plenty of smooth rocks, driftwood, and shaded areas for hiding and grazing. They are primarily algae grazers, but their diet should be supplemented with high-quality sinking wafers, blanched vegetables, and occasional frozen or live foods like daphnia and bloodworms. These peaceful and hardy fish are best kept in groups of three or more, making them ideal tank mates for other non-aggressive species like rasboras and tetras.
