Description

Faunus ater, or the black devil snail, is a very large and peaceful snail which doubles as a great algae eater! It is native to most of Southern Asia, as well as New Guinea and Northern Australia. Since it is from coastal areas, as well as many islands, it isn’t too surprising that these snails are found in brackish conditions in the wild, and just like with nerite snails, these black devil snails will thrive in freshwater, yet only breed in brackish water. Their glossy black shells come to sharp points in well raised specimens, and reach an impressive length of just under 4 inches! Their flesh is also black in color, and it is pretty easy to see how they have earned themselves the nickname black devil snail. Their shells look exactly how you would imagine a demonic horn! However, do not let the name scare you! Completely peaceful, they will crawl around your tank eating leftover food, and cleaning your aquarium.

In the aquarium, they are great as a cleanup crew, since they are omnivorous and far from picky, but just take a look at them and you’ll realize that you probably need to supplement their food, since the black devil snail eats, and eats a lot! Like most snails, this one will more or less be constantly eating, and it is one of the biggest bodied snails that is found in the hobby! Whatever you are feeding your aquarium, just make sure to toss some extra in there so your snail gets its share, and these guys will go great in any community! Able to hold their own with their tough shells and operculums, not too many animals would be able to get to their flesh.

While these Faunus ater snails are a great addition to most any livestock, you will want to be very careful when putting these with plants! They are so unfussy with their diet that they will not distinguish between algae and plants, and will most likely just eat the things that are easiest to eat. As such, you may have some limited success with particularly hardy plants, but it is best to put these large snails into a tank where you don’t mind them eating anything that exists within. Ours are already about as big as they will get, sitting at just about 3½  inches currently, and eating voraciously! These snails do not ship individually bagged.
